This article will show you how to build an unique installjob for unattended ESX3 installations. It will run on different hardware plattforms.
The process of setting up an VMware ESX3 Host ist quite similar to RHEL3/Centos3. I’m using Altriris Deployment Server (or HP Rapid Deployment Pack) but IMHO you could easily customize it for any other deployment solution.
Ich hatte das Problem, dass mehrer Thinclients die Verbindung zum Presentation Server verloren haben. Anscheinend tritt das Problem auf wenn viele Bildänderungen übertragen werden und ist somit sehr sporadisch. Die wirkliche Ursache konnte ich nicht rausfinden, aber unter

der Hotfix hat nach kurzer Testphase funktioniert. Es waren Igel LX2110 Thinclient betroffen. Vom MacOS konnte ich das Problem nicht nachstellen!

The length is mentioned with 120 minutes. I’m a non-native english speaker and needed about 90 minutes. It is divided into 5 Modules: Citrix Applicatation Delivery Infrastructur, Common Managment Task Overview, Using the Access Management Console, Installing and Configuring Citrix Licenses, Managing Citrix Licenses. To put it all together: you need to know marketing arguments, the licensing process and Access Management Console.
Read the first two Modules really carefully and make you notes (or drag&drop somewhere 
), because they asking some propaganda questions!
At the end you have to answer 16 questions. I think the passing quote is at 66%.

Als dieses Bild heute über meinen Bildschirm “flimmerte” musste ich spontan and Daniel (“Greini”) denken, der immernoch behauptet sein PII 233MHz mi 4MB Grafikkarte wäre noch “so gut wie neu”!
Übrigens Daniel: mit den 32GB Speicher ist nicht die Festplatte gemeint…
Ich mach ja ungern Produktpropaganda, aber diese Thinclients fand ich Klasse. 5W Stromverbrauch, Multi-Monitor Unterstützung, ICA und RDP. Was will man mehr??

The “Citrix is so slow” symptom is often not a problem on your terminalserver, but on your backend system. You should spend much attention to the fileserver communication because the is serving all your user data and/or profiles. The following registry key adjust your terminalserver ability to handle multiple smb file connections. The KB article just tell you to adust the client side, but IMHO you also need do get this key on the fileserver backend system.
With this setting i have much better user performance also in Windows Explorer. When a users changing the network drive and the explorer hung for some seconds this setting might also have an positive impact for you.

Da ich letztens mit Martin und Birk über das Thema geredet habe: Um mehrere Programme bzw. Servicepacks oder Hotfixes in eine SVS Schicht zu installieren kann man einfach bei new Layer als Programm die cmd.exe starten und von dort die Programme, Registrykey o.Ä. installieren. Files und Registrykes im- bzw. exportieren ist auch im nachhinein über die erweiterten Schichteigendschaften möglich.
Wenn man eine bestehende Schicht updaten möchte, dann einfach schicht wählen und “Update layer”. Der Dialog ist ähnlich wie bei einer neuen Schicht. Es ist einzig zu beachten, dass vor dem verändern eines Layer alle anderen deaktiviert sein müssen!
On Friday i passed the Citrix 1Y0-259 (Presentation Server 4.5: Administration) exam. I was really supprised about the questions and the way they were asked. The passing quote is at 68%. You have to answer 66 Questions in 120 Minutes. I think don’t have to hurry, but at the end i had just about 10 minutes left.
Compared to 1Y0-223 (Presentation Server 3.0: Administration) the test seems much harder for me.
- there are almost no “nobrainer” questions like e.g. “Which is the default XML Service port?” or “What does ICA stands for?” (like in 1Y0-223)
- about 70% of questions where scenarios: – a situation is descriped in a short way and you have to suggest a possible solution. The descripted situations are particulary really strange and hard for me to understand.
One example: “A company don’t want to implement Web Interface at this time. They may plan to introduce it in future. Concerning the situation, which windows client would you suggest: a) web client – (IMHO: false) .. b) secure access client (IMHO: false) c) Program Neighborhood (maybe right, but don’t have full 4.5 feature set) d) Program Neighborhood Agent (maybe right – need PNA Webinterface site – wich is not Access Platform). I choosed c) – but I’m still not sure.
- many questions about policies
- many questions about printers: – especially in conjunction with policies (create session printers…)
- application streaming is no topic: I just had one questions with it
- there was some challenging questions about Webinterface with external IP and Port-translation to internal Presentation Server

Ein kurze Zusammenfassung der Keyfeatures:
* DMotion: ist die Möglichkeit Maschinen von ESX 2.5.x auf ESX 3.1 auch ohne gesharedes SAN zu verschieben
* (VCB) and VMware Converter 4.0 Integration: Es soll nun auch Recover von Maschine, welche über VCB gesichert wurden möglich sein!
* Server consolidation advisor: Cool – schneidet Performancedaten von physischen Hosts mit und gibt einen Performanceausblick für die VM. Vorher brauchte man hierfür Drittprodukte.
* VC Support for VMware Server 2.0: alle VM Hosts unter einem Dach … endlich!
* Support für 128GB RAM pro Host und 64GB RAM pro VM: naja wer’s braucht…
